OCLC Enhances WorldCat.org
OCLC announced that the latest enhancement to WorldCat.org is a link to WorldCat Identities (www.worldcat.org/identities), an OCLC research prototype that creates a summary page for some 25 million personal and corporate authors mentioned in WorldCat. In addition, research journal articles discoverable on WorldCat.org now include links to the British Library Direct service, where electronic copies of the articles may be purchased. British Library Direct offers pay-as-you-go access to 20,000 international research journals in many fields.

WorldCat Identities presents an “identity” or profile of a particular person or company based on information and associations stored in the WorldCat bibliographic database. Profiled people can be authors, musicians, actors, directors, and others in key creative roles; profiled companies can be publishers, film studios, and other firms responsible for releasing a work. Links to WorldCat Identities are now available beneath the Details tab of WorldCat.org records in the About the Authors section.

A WorldCat Identities profile includes an interactive publication timeline, audience level bar graph, links to the profiles of related people or companies, and a tag cloud of associated subject headings. An Identities profile takes the holdings and metadata contributed by its cataloging member libraries and uniquely reuses them to create a reference page with broad appeal to Web users.

Reprints Desk and the American Society for Interventional Pain Physicians Announce Agreement to Provide Streamlined Reprint and ePrint Services
Los Angeles, California (September 27, 2006) -- Reprints Desk announced today that it has reached an agreement with the American Society for Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP), the publishers of Pain Physician, to offer streamlined, customer-focused Reprint and ePrint services.

"Reprints and ePrints are important methods of scholarly communication and information dissemination and we are pleased to provide a full service web-based reprint service bureau to an organization of the stature and value of ASIPP" said Jan Peterson, Head of Publisher Relations at Reprints Desk. "ASIPP can concentrate on editorial and content matters while Reprints Desk focuses on servicing their readers' reprint needs.

Reprints Desk will offer paper reproduction services of ASIPP's Open Access peer-reviewed journal Pain Physician, as well as PDF distribution options for customized ePrints, protected by DRM (digital rights management). In addition Reprints Desk will provide ASIPP with a co-branded website for placing orders, requesting quotes and tracking orders, as well as an outsourced phone, email, and web-based customer service functions.

"It's a synergistic relationship that allows us to maximize our communication opportunites and minimize administrative duties. We're excellent at meeting the challenges of peer demands, information accessibility, and initial content distribution" said ASIPP CEO Laxmaiah Manchikanti, M.D. "but there is demand for on-going use of valuable content, whether by the healthcare community that needs to get the word out about clinical trial results, or authors who want to promote and share their work with colleagues. Reprints Desk understands content re-purposing, from a practical perspective, as well as the needs and interests of the consumer."

"Copyright compliance and ease of use are the drivers behind this partnership. While Open Access publications desire to make their material broadly available, there are challenges in protecting and honoring the value of the content when third parties have a keen interest in distributing in a manner of their choice. That's where Reprints Desk steps in. We offer options for reproduction and copyright compliance in ways that meets the needs of all parties," said Peter Derycz, President of Reprints Desk.

The American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians is a not-for-profit organization representing approximately 4,000 interventional pain physicians across the United States. The organization has been growing rapidly since 1998 and has had a substantial impact on the practice of interventional pain management. Its name has been changed to American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians-PAC. Access Innovations Data Harmony Releases Automatic Email Routing and Categorization Program

Albuquerque, New Mexico (March 22, 2007) - Access Innovations, Inc. (Access), a leader in the data management industry, has announced the release of MAImail, an automatic email routing and categorization program.

Built on top of Access’s popular Data Harmony M.A.I., this innovative system is rules-based. Using any outline of knowledge, the data can be situated in the location where it is easiest to find and review. MAImail is consistent in the placement of the same data. When allocation in another spot is preferred the rule is easily altered to put the information into the correct location. MAImail also can be used in conjunction with the thesaurus editor, Thesaurus Master, to maintain the terms, and M.A.I. to augment the terms. The rules and terms can be combined in a single interface: MAIstro.

Marjorie Hlava, Access President and Chairman, discussed the genesis of this advanced program: "Have you ever come back from a trip and been faced with 1,000 emails? Some are SPAM, some are listserv updates, some are invitations, some are project related – but the number is staggering! Faced with this dilemma ourselves, and having the tools at hand to resolve it, we created a program to sort or categorize email based on mailbox structure, keywords or a taxonomy. MAImail allows data to be sorted into the proper places while we are out, or throughout the day. We then can look at groups of email by file and catch up on the whole story at once, instead of mentally jumping from thought to thought as we work our way through the inbox. It’s a huge time and energy saver."

Jay Ven Eman, Access Chief Executive Officer, added, "Other clients use MAImail to sort the general delivery boxes like ‘marketing’ or ‘info’ to the proper person based on profiles. Publishers use it to sort incoming data feeds to the proper editors for review. MAImail eliminates the need for someone to constantly go through and monitor the incoming mail. It also can filter items directly to the trash file."

Access has supported document management and database construction in Information Management for 29 years. Our proprietary Data Harmony software suite provides unparalleled support for the implementation and accuracy of search engines. August 24, 2007--Access Sciences Corporation has been named to the list of the 50 Fastest Growing Woman-Owned Businesses by the Houston Business Journal. Access Sciences ranked #7 on the list of 50, registering a 79.9% growth over the previous year.
Several representatives from Access Sciences attended the sold-out luncheon at the Westin Galleria. Says Anderson, "It is a true honor to receive this outstanding recognition in our community. It is a testament to my team and our collective efforts that we have grown so dramatically, both in numbers and in achievements."

In 1985, Janice C. Anderson formed Access Information Associates. Twenty-two years later, the company has changed names, but Access Sciences Corporation exists for the same purpose: to offer advanced consulting services, information management technologies and deployment methods for capturing and managing information assets. The collaborative methods employed by Access Sciences help their clients achieve success early, and build a solution that holds value over the long term.

ACCESS INNOVATIONS, INC. SOFTWARE PLAYS KEY ROLE IN AMERICAN ECONOMIC ASSOCIATION WEBSITE UPGRADE

Albuquerque, New Mexico (October 18 , 2007) – Access Innovations, Inc. (Access), a leader in the data management industry, has furnished its Data Harmony MAIstro software package in aid of the American Economic Association’s (AEA) upgrade of their EconLit website.

AEA’s electronic bibliography, EconLit, indexes over thirty years of worldwide economics literature. Compiled and abstracted in searchable format, EconLit is a comprehensive index of journal articles, books, book reviews, collective volume articles, working papers and dissertations. Documents are classified using a hierarchical, alphanumeric classification system, JEL Codes.

MAIstro software combines the functionality of M.A.I.™ (Machine Aided Indexer) and Thesaurus Master(TM)™ to simplify the creation and management of controlled vocabularies and their use for categorization. M.A.I. is a natural language processing tool using a rule-based expert system for interactive assignment of indexing terms to individual documents. For indexing requiring 100% accuracy editors are assisted in selecting indexing terms, but retain control of the final selections. For large volumes of data, M.A.I. also can be used for auto-categorization. Thesaurus Master is used for the creation and maintenance of a taxonomy or development of a full standards-compliant thesaurus.

AEA evaluated both statistics-based systems and the Data Harmony rule-based system, and selected MAIstro as more appropriate for EconLit indexing. Access provided training, at the conclusion of which AEA built its own rulebase. The system will improve consistency, help train Ph.D. students currently used as classifiers and speed up production. Currently, AEA is evaluating the web version of MAIstro for economists to use in selecting classifications for their own articles before submitting them to journals and conferences.

Drucilla Ekwurzel, AEA Director of Publication Services, described the software selection process: “We chose to test Access Innovations' DataHarmony software for machine-aided indexing of journal articles and books after seeing demonstrations at NFAIS and ASIDIC meetings on search engines. We already were familiar with Access Innovations’ excellent reputation for thesaurus building and data conversion.”

Margie Hlava, Access president, responded, “It is a joy to work with the EconLit folks. They quickly grasped how the rule bases and thesaurus can work with their code system and created a notation module for EconLit. It is an exciting and productive application which allows more flexibility in their production process.”
